Canada: giving hope

Wow - we've almost reached our fundraising goal of 10,000 sustainers! We have 5 days left until the New Year - if we can find 150 more donors from Canada, we'll hit our goal and massively empower Avaaz in 2011! Here's the email --

Dear fellow Avaazers,

Because of your efforts my voice is heard -- and millions of others. It feels really good not to be sheep but lions! Thank you very much!!!!
- Janneke, Avaaz member from the Netherlands
I've had moments in my life when I doubted the strength of goodness and compassion in the world, and myself.

But being part of Avaaz has been profoundly thrilling. Every day I read the most incredible messages from you (if you write 'dear ricken' at the top it comes through to my personal email) -- messages of hope, courage, and wisdom. I lived and worked in war zones before starting Avaaz. From Sierra Leone to Afghanistan, I saw some of the best and worst in humanity. But at Avaaz I have seen a humanity I didn't know existed. There are millions of us, we all just want to do the right thing, and we're willing to work for it.

Week after week, we come together for a purpose. At the beginning it was often just to speak out. But as we've grown and our voice has grown, we've begun to create real magic. Time and again, we're winning - actually stopping those things that break your heart when you read about them in the paper. Actually building the world we all dream of.

If you feel at all like I feel, consider becoming an Avaaz sustainer. It sounds incredible, but all the work of our 6.5 million strong network is made possible by just 4967 "sustainers" who donate a few dollars/euros/etc a week -- the price of a cup of coffee -- to sustain our core operating costs. As the holidays approach, we're looking to double that number, and with it our capacity to serve this incredible community. Click below to double the hope, change, and everything that we can do together:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/sustain_avaaz_16/?vl

Making a small but steady weekly contribution enables Avaaz to plan responsibly around long term costs like our tiny but awesome staff team, our website and technology, and the security of our systems (this can get pricy when our campaigns are taking on shady characters!). It also means we have the ability to respond immediately to crises as they occur and jump on opportunities for action without delay.

A very small donation of $3 or $5 per week from 10,000 Avaazers would enable our community to expand all our work next year, helping to save lives in humanitarian emergencies, protect the environment and wildlife, fight political corruption and organized crime, push for peace and reduce poverty.

Donating to Avaaz has a double-impact – because our donations not only make change now by empowering particular campaigns, every contribution builds our community that will be making change for decades to come. It's an investment with both immediate and long term results for our children's and our planet's future. Click here to contribute:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/sustain_avaaz_16/?vl

Fundraising is often a problem for social change organizations. Government or corporate funding would profoundly threaten our mission. Funding from large donors also often comes with strings attached. And high-pressure tactics like telemarketing, postal mail, or direct on-the-street programmes often cost nearly as much as they raise! That's why the Avaaz model - online, people-powered donations - is the best way in the world to power an engine of social change, and a huge part of our community's promise.

If we can multiply the number of sustainers we have, it will take our community, and our impact, to a whole new level. I can't wait.

I know that donating is an act of hope, and of trust. I feel a huge and serious sense of responsibility to be a steward of that hope, and my team and I are deeply committed to respecting the trust you place in us with your hope, time, and resources. It's a special thing we're building here, and if we can keep believing in each other, anything is possible.

With hope and gratitude for this amazing community,

Ricken Patel
Co-Founder and Executive Director
Avaaz

PS - In case you're mulling it over, here's 11 more reasons to donate to Avaaz :) :

Reason 1 – What we do Works

With 6.5 million members in every nation of the world, able to mobilize at a moment's notice to pressing needs and opportunities, Avaaz works –- together we've saved lives in Haiti and Burma, reversed government policies from Brazil to Japan, and won victories on international treaties from banning cluster bombs to preserving oceans. UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown says of Avaaz "You have driven forward the idealism of the world... do not underestimate your impact on leaders" while the Economist says Avaaz is "poised to deliver a deafening wake up call to world leaders" and Al Gore says "Avaaz is inspiring, and has already made a difference". We're only 3 years old and growing fast, and the more our members get involved and donate, the more impact we have.

Make a donation here: https://secure.avaaz.org/en/sustain_avaaz_16/?vl

Reason 2 – An Avaaz donation is an investment with permanent social change returns

With Avaaz, our donations fund high impact campaigns that also recruit more people. More people means more donations, and more impact. So you're not only achieving a particular change with your donation, you're helping grow a community with new members that will multiply your donation many times over, and be a permanent and ever-increasing source of change. It's a tremendous philanthropic value to have this kind of double and permanent impact.

Reason 3 – We have no bureaucracy

Avaaz is a massive network of citizens, but our organization is absolutely tiny – just 15 full time campaigners with operational and technology support. Most large global NGOs have hundreds or even thousands of staff. Our small size means we have no time for red tape, layers of management, or being focused on anything but getting results.

Reason 4 – We're regularly audited, and fiscally responsible

There's a lot of fear out there about misuse of donated money. Most of the fear is misplaced – most organizations are filled with good people trying to do good things. With Avaaz you can be sure – partly because we're required by law to be audited every 12 months. This audit thoroughly checks every aspect of our books and financial practices. We've been audited 3 times since we launched and every time been given a squeaky clean bill of health (for details, click here).

Reason 5 – We have a world-class team that does outstanding work

Campaigning, advocacy and social change are a serious and demanding business – the more competent the team, the more impact our donations have. Avaaz attracts some of the best campaigners and advocates in the world. Many of our campaign directors joined us after being CEOs of successful multi-million dollar advocacy organizations, and most have degrees from the top universities in the world.

Donate now: https://secure.avaaz.org/en/sustain_avaaz_16/?vl

Reason 6 – We're 100% Independent

Avaaz takes absolutely no money from governments or corporations. This is hugely important to ensuring that our voice is exclusively determined by the values of our members, and not by any large funder or agenda. While we received initial seed grants from partner organizations and charitable organizations, almost 90% of the Avaaz budget now comes small online donations. This means that the only agenda we have to follow is the people's agenda.

Reason 7 – We pass the money on when it makes sense, and give to the best efforts

Avaaz has donated almost $4 million to other organizations, because we saw them as better placed than us to have impact on a particular issue. For example, we've granted $1.6 million to Burmese monks and aid groups, and $1.3 million to Haitian aid organizations – see this video from the groups that received our donations. The way we support organizations is important too. Most foundations have endless process and constraints that make them slow, bureaucratic and risk averse in supporting advocacy. Avaaz finds the best people and organizations and doesn't micromanage them – we just empower them to do what they know best.

Reason 8 – We're political (this really matters)

Most charities offer tax deductibility for donations. But this means that they are, in a way, partially tax-payer funded, and governments use that to place a very thick set of rules on what they can and can't do. Chief among them is restricting what they can say to criticize, support, or oppose a politician. Avaaz is very rare in that our donations are not tax deductible, leaving us 100% free to say and do whatever we need to to get leaders to listen to people. Since so many important issues are won and lost in the political realm, this makes us much more effective than advocacy groups that shy away from speaking out politically.

Reason 9 – We go where the greatest needs and opportunities are

Most organizations focus on a single issue over a long period of time. This is very important to do, but that can mean that when desperate needs or amazing opportunities for social change arise, they get ignored because everyone is working on their own issue. Avaaz campaigns target the most urgent needs and opportunities, showing up just when a powerful burst of citizens' attention is needed most. We work continuously with top quality partners in the areas we campaign on, and all describe Avaaz as an amazing added value to their work.

Click to donate: https://secure.avaaz.org/en/sustain_avaaz_16/?vl

Reason 10 – Democratic accountability is hard-wired into our model

The Avaaz model of campaigning is people-powered. Our priorities are set at annual and weekly levels by polls of our membership and every campaign we run is first polled with members. Click here for results from our 2010 annual poll. No matter how much work we put into developing a campaign, if it fails to get the greenlight from members, we don't run it. So on a day to day basis, how we spend the donations we receive is determined directly by members.

Reason 11 – There's no other organization like us

Avaaz is the world's first and only massive, high-tech, people-powered, multi-issue, genuinely global advocacy organization. In a world where the problems we face are consistently global, and the solutions to them increasingly require global democratic action, Avaaz is uniquely placed to effect change. No other organization can rapidly mobilize large-scale, coordinated democratic pressure in over 150 countries within 24 hours. A new model of internet-based, people-powered politics has changed politics in several countries, and Avaaz is taking that proven model global. The result is already the largest global online movement in history, and we're just getting started.

the great global holiday fuzzy

Dear Avaaz community,

"...now I am not alone, there are millions of us who all want the same thing, and together we are powerful"
- Tracey Luke, Avaaz member from South Africa

Our team gets a ton of email from our community each week stuffed with wonderful messages of inspiration, warmth and wisdom -- we call them "warm fuzzies". It's precious anytime you get inspiration from someone else, but particularly at this time of year they feel like amazing gifts.

So in the spirit of the season, let's give these lovely gifts of inspiration directly to each other! Click below to see and join a live chat of our global community in 14 languages, and leave a 'warm fuzzy' of gratitude, hope, wisdom (or whatever you feel inspired to write!) for fellow Avaazers round the world:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/giving_thanks/?vl

Our warm fuzzies could be anything - what inspires us, a quote we love, or just a warm message to the world. Read below to see a few of the fuzzies we've received in the last couple of days. Some are written to the Avaaz team, and we're really grateful, but Avaaz would be just a few people with computers if we weren't 6.5 million people of hope and principle spread across the world. So let's direct our fuzzys to whom they belong - each other!

This year we've taken tens of millions of actions together in over 50 campaigns. There's much more work to do, but let's take a moment to show gratitude to each other for being part of this amazing community of people who care.

With enormous gratitude for each and every person in this community,
The Avaaz team

PS - here's some of the amazing messages we've gotten in the last few days:

"A heartfelt thank you, and a deep bow…as we say in this part of the world, "Amandla!" (Power) and "Sterkte!" (Strength)" - Mary Ann Cullinan

"I am so honored and touched to be a part of Avaaz. It feels different, powerful, and wonderful to be part of such an engaged international community. Because of you, I called the Iranian embassy to demand a woman's freedom from barbaric customs. Amazing that! Every time I see an email in my inbox from you I smile and read it eagerly. I love, love, love what you do. I love your timeliness, I love your action items, I've donated before and I will donate again."

I am not a pessimist. I know that we are in "maya" as the buddhists would say, but I also know that this is a dream we are dreaming together, and for each of us who choose consciously to dream a different dream, we have the impact of 100,000 people dreaming unconsciously.

Here's to dreaming wide awake, and here's to seeing the changes we wish to make in the world come true! With gratitude and affection, Jen W"

"I am wholeheartedly committed to all that you do. I honour your intent; the world needs Avaaz, and I am deeply grateful for all you stand for. Peace, Brian L"

"I will add my message of admiration for all that you and your fellow Avaazers do! I am so grateful to have found your organisation and to see how many, many people do care. I have always been a strong upholder of justice and there are times in this corrupt and unjust world when you feel despair. But with Avaaz you realise you are not alone and as you said ONE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! So, THANK YOU!! Allysen C"

"i continue to be inspired by your work. keep the fire burning, the well of hope shall not dry... - Dom-an, Philippines"

"Avaaz gives all members a lot of hope and joy- and certainly, it feels like real magic- to have a voice and make some impact this way. And yes, it allows us to dream that dreams can come true and a better world awaits just round the corner. Peace. Lynley R B"

"Bring it on, bad governments, Avaaz is here to stay! - Chantal M."

"I just want to say that I am consistently amazed by the work you do, and to see a large-scale organisation that is converting idealism to realism armed with amongst other things, hope and faith and high moral values, well this fills me with hope, even though I admit I sometimes despair. I read your campaigning emails, and I believe again that humanity is essentially beautiful, proven by yourselves in your good fight, and also proven by how much everyone is working to retain or re-discover that beauty. The work you're doing is so incredibly important, and you couldn't have produced such an impact in any other way - a global online voice. It is a working, proactive, loving, redeeming force.

You're reminding people that it is ok to care. It is ok to want the best, to believe anything is possible. You remind us it is important not to be too cynical, not to be pessimistic, not to believe that the world on a large-scale is unable to be changed for the better.

Thank you, on behalf of this world, for everything you are doing. May you be richly rewarded, and long may you continue this fight. Keep strength, and keep faith, and just thank you, thank you so much. You lift up my heart. All the best for the difficult problems yet to be faced, Emma H - UK"

"I just want to say that I think your organization is beyond fantastic. When I respond to events that are taking place in the world that I don't agree with and I sign my name and send it to you guys I feel for the first time that I truly am a child of Earth and I have a say in what transpires. It really is a good feeling. Prior to Avaaz I never really bothered to depress myself with things I could not change, but now I am not alone there are millions of us who all want the same thing and together we are powerful. - Tracey L, South Africa"

First of all, I wish you and your magically wonderful team of beautiful thinking humans at Avaaz to know that Avaaz has, for over 2 years now, provided me with hope in a world where relentless ego and greed of comparatively few destroy and control the lives of good ordinary people and mother earth herself.

I cannot find words to express the increasing depth of overpoweringly negative feelings I have for at least 30 years about wrongs in the world - feelings made infinitely worse by being powerless. Avaaz and all its supporters are helping me hugely - for me, this it pure magic - while dictatorship and destruction is everywhere to varying degrees, Avaaz gives voice to the powerless and suppressed under the big sick pyramid....I wish joy and glorious universal power of good to all of you and all Avaaz followers......

Thank you for the gift of voice to the good citizens of this Earth. Most sincerely from Mary F, Ireland."

"I am just so grateful that there are people out there like you who are committed with utter, ruthless conviction that there is a better way from the bottom to the top. With love - Kate M"

"You all work so endlessly hard, so here is something to lighten the moods and refuel the heart: http://www.wimp.com/babyhummingbird
lots of love Lulu and Paisley

The most heartfelt congratulations for the work you do. Avaaz is such a wonderful, mind-blowing organisation. With very best wishes, Merrilyn S."

Most of it is misplaced – most organizations are filled with good people trying to do good things.

Donate now: https://secure.avaaz.org/en/sustain_avaaz_6/?vl

Click to donate: https://secure.avaaz.org/en/sustain_avaaz_6/?vl

WikiLeaks: Stop the crackdown - incredible response!

Incredible - nearly 400,000 signatures in one day for press freedom! Join the massive outcry and forward the email below -

Dear friends,

The chilling intimidation campaign against WikiLeaks (when they have broken no laws) is an attack on freedom of the press and democracy. We urgently need a massive public outcry to stop the crackdown -- let's get to 1 million voices and take out full page ads in US newspapers this week!

The massive campaign of intimidation against WikiLeaks is sending a chill through free press advocates everywhere.

Legal experts say WikiLeaks has likely broken no laws. Yet top US politicians have called it a terrorist group and commentators have urged assassination of its staff. The organization has come under massive government and corporate attack, but WikiLeaks is only publishing information provided by a whistleblower. And it has partnered with the world's leading newspapers (NYT, Guardian, Spiegel etc) to carefully vet the information it publishes.

The massive extra-judicial intimidation of WikiLeaks is an attack on democracy. We urgently need a public outcry for freedom of the press and expression. Sign the petition to stop the crackdown and forward this email to everyone -- let's get to 1 million voices and take out full page ads in US newspapers this week!

http://www.avaaz.org/en/wikileaks_petition/?vl

WikiLeaks isn't acting alone -- it's partnered with the top newspapers in the world (New York Times, The Guardian, Der Spiegel, etc) to carefully review 250,000 US diplomatic cables and remove any information that it is irresponsible to publish. Only 800 cables have been published so far. Past WikiLeaks publications have exposed government-backed torture, the murder of innocent civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan, and corporate corruption.

The US government is currently pursuing all legal avenues to stop WikiLeaks from publishing more cables, but the laws of democracies protect freedom of the press. The US and other governments may not like the laws that protect our freedom of expression, but that's exactly why it's so important that we have them, and why only a democratic process can change them.

Reasonable people can disagree on whether WikiLeaks and the leading newspapers it's partnered with are releasing more information than the public should see. Whether the releases undermine diplomatic confidentiality and whether that's a good thing. Whether WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has the personal character of a hero or a villain. But none of this justifies a vicious campaign of intimidation to silence a legal media outlet by governments and corporations. Click below to join the call to stop the crackdown:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/wikileaks_petition/?vl

Ever wonder why the media so rarely gives the full story of what happens behind the scenes? This is why - because when they do, governments can be vicious in their response. And when that happens, it's up to the public to stand up for our democratic rights to a free press and freedom of expression. Never has there been a more vital time for us to do so.

With hope,
Ricken, Emma, Alex, Alice, Maria Paz and the rest of the Avaaz team.

Austria: cheating on climate?

Dear friends around Austria,

deforestationAustria is undermining global climate talks -- happening now in Mexico -- by pushing an accounting trick that would hide the cost of destructive forestry. A national outcry now could push Environment Minister Nikolaus Berlakovich to be a climate leader and block the logging loophole. Send a message now, and forward this email to your friends:
Right now, international climate negotiations in Mexico are heating up. But Austria is seeking special favours for its forest industry which would undermine the talks. Environment Minister Nikolaus Berlakovich arrives at the summit on Wednesday, so we have just one day to shift his position -- let's call on him to oppose loopholes for loggers!

Forests are a key line of defence against climate change, because trees absorb global warming pollution. Limiting the destruction of forests is a keystone of any climate treaty. But logging companies are seeking to duck their climate obligations, lobbying the Environment Ministry for a massive exemption from accounting for the environmental costs of commercial tree-cutting.

It's not too late to stop this sham. Let's send a resounding message from Austrian citizens to safeguard our forests and climate.Click below to send your urgent message to Minister Berlakovich -- it will be sent to him directly before he leaves, and then delivered at the talks in Cancun before they end on Friday:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/austria_trees_not_tricks/?vl

The special conditions the government is seeking could actually enable Austria to increase its overall levels of carbon pollution from forests without penalty, meaning destructive forestry could substantially undermine everything else Austria does to reduce emissions. It's one enormous accounting trick.

Meanwhile, international climate talks are hanging by a thread after the failure of world leaders to deliver a deal in Copenhagen last year. By pushing for these special rules, forest-rich nations like Austria aren't just shirking their commitments and cutting huge holes in any treaty -- they're putting the whole talks at risk, just when progress is most needed.

If we can switch our government's forest policy from a chainsaw to a champion, other countries could shift too, injecting new hope into the climate negotiations that will shape the world we all live on. Before the talks end on Friday, let's send a flood of messages to Minister Berlakovich, urging him to close the loopholes in Cancun. Send your message now, then forward this email:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/austria_trees_not_tricks/?vl

Forests are the lungs of our planet, sustaining people, animals and plants worldwide. They're also a potential life-saver in the fight against climate change. It's time they were accorded the same respect by governments that they have always received from the world's people.

With hope,

Ben, Iain, Alex, Graziela, Ben M, Mia, David and the rest of the Avaaz team.

The people vs recession

Dear friends,

With over 100 million thrown back into poverty and unemployment, experts agree we urgently need a global jobs plan to stop the recession. Gordon Brown has appealed to Avaaz for a massive outcry to persuade the G20 group of nations to act - watch Brown's appeal and sign the petition below:

The global recession has already plunged over 100 million people back into poverty and unemployment -- but this week, we could turn the tide of economic destruction.

Right now, French President Sarkozy, the new chair of the G20 group of the world's largest economies, is deciding the group's agenda. Over 300 top economists have urged the G20 to launch a coordinated global investment plan that saves millions from grinding hardship. But governments are doing the opposite - going it alone, slashing spending, and blaming each other.

President Sarkozy often seizes opportunities for dramatic popular action -- a massive outcry to him this week can persuade him to lead. Former UK PM Gordon Brown has urgently appealed to Avaaz to act - click below to watch his appeal, forward this email, and sign the petition for a Jobs and Justice plan, to be personally delivered to Sarkozy when we reach 500,000 voices:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/global_economy_gb_video_2/?vl

The global recession has already put 34 million people out of work and thrown 60 million people back into poverty, but governments across the world are doing exactly the wrong thing: proposing deep cuts to public services, implementing protectionist policies and reducing global development assistance – plans that destroy still more livelihoods and threaten our social fabric.

This is a familiar story: in the 1930s, amidst the Great Depression, governments sought to "reassure the markets" by slashing services and balancing budgets. But this backfired entirely: the cuts shut more and more of their citizens out of the economy, which only made the economic crisis worse. It's precisely when the markets are failing that governments must step in together to fill the gap.

We have already lost a great deal of ground, but it's not too late. The discredited economists who spurred the old bubble economy are giving way to a new wave of fresh thinkers -- including, surprisingly, the powerful International Monetary Fund, which is finally questioning its past insistence that countries in crisis cut their budgets. Brown and other prominent figures are making the rounds to world leaders to encourage this global plan. But they are the first to say that they need a mass movement to make it happen. Let's raise our voices now for leadership to create jobs and protect citizens from poverty:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/global_economy_gb_video_2/?vl

Economic collapses can threaten everything we care about. When countries turn inwards, they abandon cooperation on issues like climate change, fighting global poverty and nuclear disarmament. They blame each other and groups of their own citizens -- leading to xenophobia, conflict and, as in the 1930s, the rise of awful political movements like fascism. But cooperation can build success upon success: as we recognize that our destinies are interlinked, a joint recovery can pave the way to the world we all believe in. Let's seize this moment to raise a cry for that greater vision -- of an economy that lifts us all towards a brighter future.

With hope,

Ben, Stephanie, Ricken, Alex, Paula, Maria Paz, Alice and the rest of the Avaaz team

P.S. Winning a global economic revival will take time. But this moment, when the G20 is deciding its priorities, is a pivotal chance to make a difference. Join the call for a global jobs recovery here:

Days left to save tuna

Dear friends,

Overfishing has led Atlantic bluefin tuna to the brink of extinction. The multi-billion dollar industry is controlled by powerful cartels and complicit officials, but with enough public support a plan for their survival could be agreed at a global summit starting today. Let's call for urgent action now and save Tuna and our future marine ecosystems:
Bluefin tuna face annihilation. These majestic fish are at the heart of the marine food chain -- without them, oceanic ecosystems could collapse. But a crucial summit launched today could be our chance at a vital recovery plan -- with a global outcry.

As the tuna talks begin, their outcome is utterly uncertain: Japan, which consumes 80% of bluefin tuna, is calling for action, but other nations are wary of its seriousness, and Europe is deeply divided and under pressure from Mediterranean governments allied with elite and even criminal fishing cartels.

Our best chance to make this summit a success is to transform it from a behind-the-scenes negotiation into a political firestorm. The power of the cartels is greatest when nobody is paying attention -- but if we show governments that the world's eyes are on them, we can open a chance for a breakthrough. Sign the petition to save this ecologically vital fish and forward this email -- our public demands will be delivered directly to negotiators and the media inside the summit:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/tuna_at_risk_2/?vl

The situation is dramatic -- Atlantic bluefin tuna have been reduced to just 15% of their historic levels and tuna fishing is becoming a business of criminals with a $4 billion black market. One tuna fetches $100,000 and fishermen are duping the regulators with falsified data, shunning monitoring systems, rampantly overfishing and selling illegal, unreported and unregulated fish.

All those responsible for ensuring sustainable tuna stocks are failing -- The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), the global regulating body that meets this week, has ignored their own scientists recommendations for a blue fin fishing ban; the EC Fisheries Commissioner, who initially proposed emergency action, is being blocked by member states and the EC has itself subsidised specialised vessels for over exploitation; and trading countries have illegally exceeded ICCAT quotas. Continued negligence could wipe out blue fin tuna completely.

Today, tuna profits are controlled by a very small high-tech fishing elite who run purse seine vessels and tuna fattening farms. But the rest of the fishing communities livelihoods are suffering massive losses. And this plundering affects all of us -- as bluefin are near the top of the food-chain their commercial extinction could set off a domino effect with dire consequences. Put simply -- without the big predator fish, the medium fish will eat all the small fish and no one is left to eat the microrganisms. In just a few decades this could mean our oceans die and are overrun by jelly fish and slime.

Ironically it may be Japan who push hardest for serious action at the ICCAT meeting. The Japanese Fisheries Agency is saying Japanese consumers may have to "just forget about tuna for the time being," whilst the Mitsubishi Corporation, one of the world's largest buyers of bluefin tuna has announced its commitment to protect healthy stocks, support spawning sanctuaries and reduced purchases to enable the recovery of threatened populations.

But we cannot leave this to the politicians and the players in the tuna market. It's time to show our outrage at this shameless flouting of international rules, and call loudly for ICCAT to take urgent action to halve catch quotas (at a minimum), implement effective and transparent enforcement, punish violating countries and create no take, protected spawning reserves. Sign the petition and send this to everyone:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/tuna_at_risk_2/?vl

These magnificent species have been exploited to the brink of collapse -- and this summit could be our last chance to save them or they will disappear from our oceans forever.

What Sakineh needs now

Dear friends,

Our global outcry worked and Sakineh is still alive! The next step is to fund international experts to strengthen Sakineh's legal defense and work with officials in Iran to resolve this shameful situation. Let's build on our 900,000-strong outcry and fund the next steps to win her freedom once and for all. Click below to help:
Sakineh is still alive! We stopped her stoning sentence, postponed an attempt to hang her quietly and let the Iranian government know that the world is watching and outraged. Now is the time to save Sakineh for good.

Last week over 900,000 of us sent messages and made calls to key government officials. But now we're at an impasse and have to give Iran a way out of this dilemma. The next step towards freeing Sakineh is to fund international experts to strengthen her legal defense and work with officials in Iran to resolve this shameful situation. If thousands of us donate in the next three days we can hire an elite team of advocates, keep campaigning to free Sakineh and work on behalf of others facing brutal injustice. Click on the link below to support Sakineh:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/whats_next_for_sakineh/?vl

Iran has tried everything to keep Sakineh in jail. They accused her of adultery and sentenced her to stoning despite the fact that the alleged adultery took place after her husband's death. They sentenced her to death for the murder of her husband even though she had already been acquitted, and another man convicted and sentenced for the murder. They even arrested her son and lawyer and forced the rest of the legal team into exile. After massive international pressure, Iranian officials must be desperate for a face-saving way out of this mess..

And now, for the first time, there is dissent within Iran from Conservative forces about the treatment of Sakineh and the way her case has been handled by the Iranian government. Some are calling for her acquittal of all charges.

A team of diplomatic and legal experts could build on this dissent and work within Iran to secure Sakineh's release. Our call, 900,000 voices strong, in combination with pressure from inside Iran for Sakineh's release is the best chance we have to save Sakineh. Now is the moment to give whatever we can to end her brutal persecution:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/whats_next_for_sakineh/?vl

In the campaign against the death penalty worldwide, Sakineh's survival is an important beacon of hope. We have shown unprecedented support for her through an explosive petition, strategic ads in Iranian-allied countries and a flood of messages to world leaders generating an international outcry. Join us in this next step towards freeing Sakineh, ending stoning, and eliminating the death penalty across the globe.

With hope and determination,

Emma, Alice, Stephanie, Ricken, David, Graziela, Iain and the rest of the Avaaz team.

It's Thursday, and Sakineh is still alive. A staggering 500,000 of us contacted leaders in one day -- and they're instantly making calls to Iran! Our pressure is working, but we need to ramp it up to keep her alive -- forward this email to everyone:

Dear Friends,

Iran could execute Sakineh Ashtiani tomorrow. We saved her from stoning, now we have 24 hours to get key powers to take emergency action to stop this shameful killing.
Tomorrow, Iran could execute Sakineh Ashtiani.

Our global outcry stopped her unjust stoning sentence in July. Now we have 24 hours to save her life.

Iran's allies and key UN powers are our best hope -- they could persuade Iran of the serious political cost of this high-profile killing. Click below to send them an urgent call to action and send this to everyone -- it only takes three minutes and we are her last chance:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/24h_to_save_sakineh/?vl

Sakineh's adultery case is a tragic sham stacked with human rights violations. First, she was to be stoned to death. But the Iranian government had to revoke the sentence after her children generated a worldwide outcry against the farcical trial -- she could not speak the language used in court, and the alleged incidents of adultery took place after her husband's death.

Then her lawyer was forced into exile, and the prosecution conjured up a new trumped-up charge for which she would be executed -- the murder of her husband. Despite this being double jeopardy, as she is already serving time for alleged complicity in this crime, Sakineh was tortured and paraded on national television to 'confess', and was found guilty. Since then the regime has arrested two German journalists, her lawyer and her son, who has bravely led the international campaign to save his mother. All remain in prison and Sakineh's son and lawyer have been also tortured and have no access to lawyers.

Now Iranian human rights activists state an order has just been issued from Tehran to implement her killing immediately. She is on the list and tomorrow is execution day.

Our persistent campaigning led Iran to drop Sakineh's stoning sentence and captured the attention of leaders in countries with influence on Iran, like Turkey and Brazil. Now let's urgently raise our voices to stop her killing and inhumane treatment and free her, her lawyer, her son and the jailed German journalists. Send a message and share this emergency call with friends and family:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/24h_to_save_sakineh/?vl

A massive public outcry has the moral authority to stop heinous crimes. Let's use these 24 hours to send a clear message -- the world is watching and we all stand together today to save Sakineh's life and against injustice everywhere.

With hope and determination,

Alice, Stephanie, Pascal, Giulia, Benjamin and the whole of the Avaaz team

EU: corporate corruption controls

Dear friends,

Top European Commission politicians are taking lucrative corporate lobbyist jobs and helping big business to control Brussels! Let's persuade the Commission to respond to a European Parliament demand for a tough new code of conduct -- sign the petition for new rules to stop these abuses of power:
It's outrageous -- over half of top European Union politicians move straight from their posts into lucrative corporate lobbying jobs -- turning the EU into a "lobbyocracy" run by big business, not the people.

The European Parliament is up in arms and has just threatened to withhold EU budget money until a new code of conduct is introduced to block officials rushing to become lobbyists. In a few days parliamentarians will meet to hear the Commission's proposals, but they need support to force a decisive change.

This is a chance to clean up Brussels, but it will take a massive public outcry. The grip of big business on EU decisions subverts our democratic priorities, from agriculture to climate to energy. Click to sign the petition -- which will be delivered to top decision-makers at a meeting in the Parliament -- and forward this email to friends:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/eu_lobby_rules/?vl

The "revolving door" between the European Commission and the lobbyists fuels corruption, as officials compete for the fattest pay cheque when they leave office and then put their relationships and influence to work for the highest bidder.

The recently resigned EU Industry Commissioner has already joined the boards of 4 large firms -- and set up his own EU lobbying company! And, months before she left office, another European Commissioner accepted a position with a giant insurance company which had a direct interest in decisions she was taking.

Such new jobs are supposed to be vetted by the Commission. But the secret 'ethics committee' responsible for that is failing to stand up for the public interest. It had never blocked a single appointment until September, when - following outrage in the media - it prevented former financial services commissioner Charlie McCreevy going to work with a British bank.

If we join together now, public and parliamentary pressure can break through Brussels complacency, block the industry commissioner's appointments and force Commission president Barroso to fulfil his long-promised - but never implemented - promise for a tough new code of conduct to prevent abuse. Sign the petition and circulate widely:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/eu_lobby_rules/?vl

In the world we all want, public servants will serve only the public, not personal or corporate agendas. Our governments are among our most powerful tools to create change, but they must be ours. Let's take back Brussels for the people of Europe.

With hope,

Alex, Benjamin, Ricken, Alice, Luis, Ben and all of the Avaaz team

P.S. Former European Commissioners continue to get paid 50% of their salary for three years, precisely to prevent them rushing to cash in with corporate jobs. Sticks are clearly needed alongside these carrots.

The end of whales - 36 hours left!

Wow - over 300,000 people have signed on in 2 days! We've got 36 hours left in this summit -- sign below and forward this email to everyone.

Dear friends,

Many whales are among the 1/3rd of all life on the planet that is being driven to extinction. World governments are meeting this week to consider a bold plan to protect 20% of the world's oceans and lands by 2020.

We have 36 hours left, and a global public outcry could tip the balance. Click to sign the petition for the 20/20 plan and forward this email:
There are only 300 northern right whales left, and 99% of blue whales have been wiped out. These majestic giants are endangered species, and their case is being played out across the world, time and again. In fact, one third of all life forms on the planet are on the brink of extinction.

The natural world is being crushed by human activity, waste and exploitation. But there is a plan to save it -- a global agreement to create, fund and enforce protected areas covering 20% of our lands and seas by 2020. And right now, 193 governments are meeting in Japan to address this crisis.

We have just 36 hours left in this crucial meeting. Experts say that politicians are hesitant to adopt such an ambitious goal, but that a global public outcry could tip the balance, making leaders feel the eyes of the world upon them. Click to sign the urgent 20/20 petition, and forward this email widely -- the message will be delivered directly to the meeting in Japan:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/the_end_of_whales/?vl

Ironically, 2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity. By now, our governments were supposed to have "achieved a significant reduction of the current rate of biodiversity loss." They have failed, consistently caving to industry when given a choice between narrow profit and protecting species. Our animals, plants, oceans, forests, soils, and rivers are choking under immense burdens from over-exploitation and other pressures.

Humans are the primary cause of this destruction. But we can turn it around -- we've saved species from extinction before. The causes of biodiversity decline are vast, and stopping them is going to require a move away from empty piecemeal promises with no clarity on who will pay, to a bold plan with strict enforcement and serious funding. The 20/20 plan is precisely that: governments will be forced to execute strict programmes to ensure that 20% of our earth is protected by the 2020 deadline, and massively scale up funding.

It has to be now. All over the world the picture is beginning to look bleaker -- there are only 3,200 tigers left in the wild, our oceans are running out of fish, and we're losing unique food sources to large mono-plantations. Nature is resilient, but we have to give it a safe place to bounce back. That's why this meeting is key -- it's a watershed moment to accelerate action based on clear commitments that protect nature's capital.

If our governments feel overwhelming public pressure right now to be courageous, we can jolt them to commit to the 20/20 plan at this meeting. But it's going to take every one of us to get that message to echo around the convention in Japan. Sign this urgent petition below, then forward it widely:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/the_end_of_whales/?vl

Already this year Avaaz, members have played a critical role in protecting elephants, defending the whale-hunting ban, and securing the world's largest Marine Protected Area in the Chagos Islands. Our community has shown that we can set ambitious goals -- and win. This campaign is the next stage in the essential battle to create the world that most of us everywhere want -- where natural resources and species are valued, and our living planet is protected for future generations.
